A agenda de desenvolvimento sustentável da ONU contempla 17 objetivos e nenhum deles inclui um olhar claramente dedicado aos idosos e ao envelhecimento.
Há algumas passagens que os citam, porém com o olhar de vulnerabilidade, reforçando a imagem do idoso atrelada a fragilidade.
Pensando em sustentabilidade como condição de um sistema que permite a sua conservação, como ignorar a sustentabilidade da vida?

- “Até 2030, acabar com todas as formas de desnutrição… e atender às necessidades nutricionais dos adolescentes, mulheres grávidas e lactantes e pessoas idosas” (Objetivo 2. Acabar com a fome, alcançar a segurança alimentar e melhoria da nutrição e promover a agricultura sustentável).
- “Até 2030, proporcionar o acesso a sistemas de transporte seguros, acessíveis, sustentáveis e a preço acessível para todos… com especial atenção para as necessidades das pessoas em situação de vulnerabilidade, mulheres, crianças, pessoas com deficiência e idosos.” (Objetivo 11 – Tornar as cidades e os assentamentos humanos inclusivos, seguros, resilientes e sustentáveis).
- “Até 2030, proporcionar o acesso universal a espaços públicos seguros, inclusivos, acessíveis e verdes, particularmente para as mulheres e crianças, pessoas idosas e pessoas com deficiência”. (Objetivo 11 – Tornar as cidades e os assentamentos humanos inclusivos, seguros, resilientes e sustentáveis).
- “As pessoas que estão vulneráveis devem ser empoderadas. Aqueles cujas necessidades são refletidas na Agenda incluem todas as crianças, jovens, pessoas com deficiência (das quais mais de 80% vivem na pobreza), as pessoas que vivem com HIV/AIDS, idosos, povos indígenas, refugiados, pessoas deslocadas internamente e migrantes…” (Declaração – A nova agenda – item 23)
